ABOUT US

We produce, forge and fabricate some of the finest pieces of work to meet the functionality of its intended purpose.  We work across a number of sectors from fine metalwork to large fabrication projects across the UK.

Our workshop is equipped with traditional forging tools and equipment alongside the most up to date fabrication and welding equipment, and we are able to work in the full range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. With our ability to combine the contemporary alongside traditional skills and processes we make full use of Computer Aided Draughting with laser cutting as an example.

As our work is of a bespoke nature, we meticulously treat each commission individually. We provide advice, drawings and pictures to enable you to choose the wrought ironwork that is appropriate for your given aspirations and vision.

Ian Caudwell

Ian, our master craftsman, founded Billinghay Forge in 1988 with his wife Joanne from a newly restored workshop in Billinghay Lincolnshire.

Upon leaving school at 16, Ian learnt his trade at a local forge, completing a three-year apprenticeship as a wrought iron smith with the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas.  This comprised of block release study at the Great Yorkshire Show Ground Forge and workshop visits from Master Blacksmith Joe Hanson.  Throughout this time Ian undertook training in fabrication, welding and teaching at evening classes at a local technical college.

Ian went on to train with a number of other qualified craftsmen before making his mark on the industry which he is so fond of.  His work can be found all over the UK and he has had the pleasure of working with some renowned architects, artists and garden designers as well as personally designing and sculpting his own work.  His work has been prestigiously displayed in renowned retailers, John Lewis (including work which formed part of their show window fronting on to Oxford Street and Liberty of London.

From 2000 to the final parade in 2013 Ian built the steel framed floats which were then headed in tulips for the Spalding Flower Parade seen by thousands of people.

His eye for detail and bespoke nature of each of his commissions leads to some stunning displays of craftmanship. His adaptability to provide not only fine ironwork but also truly astounding fabrication work (including detailed stainless-steel work) makes him an exceptionally knowledgeable craftsman.

Ian loves to see his work being enjoyed and utilised for its intended purposes and would welcome any discussions from prospective clients on how Billinghay Forge can deliver their aspirations and vision.
